As you start to make goals and plans for the coming year, there’s one very important thing to keep in mind. This very important thing is something that most of us tend to leave off of our list of goals and plans. But it’s probably one of the most important things we can ever do; that is, to practice being happy with what you have NOW.
This idea was best communicated by Jim Rohn, who said, “Learn how to be happy with what you have while you pursue all that you want.” Having big goals and working toward them is admirable and worthy of your time and attention. But if your attachment is to things, and you think that those things will be what makes you happy, then you might find disappointment when you reach those goals. Happiness is something that starts inside of us. Being content with what we have, who we are, and where we’re headed in life, is what will bring peace to our souls, regardless of our level of material success.
Money is a great thing. You can do more with money, including helping others, traveling, and living life to the fullest. But money cannot buy the things that bring true joy, like family connections, emotional peace, strength, and wholeness.
Sometimes it can be difficult to find happiness when you are struggling. This coming year, try to incorporate a few things into your life that will help you get there:
Learn to meditate. Take time to stop and breathe. Focus on your breath and the miracle that is your body. Pause more, and take care of yourself. You and your emotional health so often get overlooked in the shuffle of life. Take time to let yourself just be. No screens. No clients. No interruptions. Just you, your breath, and gratitude for the life you have.
Practice remaining present. When we’re with our loved ones, we are often not present. We are thinking about the many things we need to do later or the things we didn’t do today, and we are missing what’s right in front of us. Stay in the here and now. Enjoy the people around you, and take the time to connect with them.
Practice financial literacy. Often, when we are struggling to reach our goals, we feel like we never have enough. But we usually have enough; we just need to learn how to manage what we already have. Focus on what you DO have, not what you DON’T. If you're reading this, you're already living better than 80% of the world. Social media has created a world in our minds where everyone else’s lives seem so much better than ours. But that’s really a facade. Everyone is struggling. They just don’t show it. Focus on your own life, acknowledge and appreciate everything that you have, and be grateful for those things. It’s ok to want more but focus on appreciating what you have now, first.
If you're ever going to be happy, practice being happy now. Otherwise, you might reach your many goals, yet still, find yourself never fulfilled. Make this one of your top priorities for 2022. Everything else good will follow.
